Exploring Bishop Bickerton’s Six Understandings for the Church
This week Pastor Kelvin Jones began a three week series exploring the six understandings that Bishop Bickerton expressed in his 2021 Episcopal Address. They are as follows:
- Relationships are the key to everything.
- Understanding the what that you do is the beginning of understanding the why within you.
- The Word of God has got to become flesh.
- The flame has to be lit!
- Conversion is essential.
- Love is an absolute
In discussing these points, Bishop Bickerton said,
“These six basic understandings are the key to how we approach the next year to 18 months in our churches and in our annual conference. These are the guidelines that we will use as we work through this season of recovery and resetting. These will be the components of a framework out of which we will once again find our stride, evaluate our sustainability, and determine the next best way to live out our mission, vision and core values.”
Bishop Thomas Bickerton 2021 Episcopal Address
In these six points, Bishop Bickerton is pointing the church back to its basic assignment from Jesus–to make disciples. Pastor Kelvin’s plan is to take the next three weeks to delve into these six basic understandings, covering two each week. Today he covered the second and third one. Pastor’s message helped us to see that the devotional habits we encourage, and the Word of God lived out with integrity by mentors provide key foundations for making disciples. These foundational steps make our faith more contagious. Next week he will discuss the third and fourth understandings. And on July 25, he will draw inspiration for us from the first and last of the six.
