It is hard to overestimate the value of a good father.

Father’s Day is another important Sunday at Copper Hill Church. Pastor Kelvin reminded us that in today’s world, where so many families are broken, there is a greater need than ever, not just for fathers, but for all men who are in mentoring roles – coaches, grandfathers, church school teachers, step-fathers, etc. All of us take our cue from our Heavenly Father who teaches us how to love one another. Children need love that is communicated well. Pastor Kelvin pointed out three ways that fathers and mothers can make sure their message of love gets through to their children.
- positive focused attention
- quality time spent with the child
- personal verbal affirmation
A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.
Billy Graham
Pastor Kelvin exhorted that a good father does not leave all the spiritual training of children to others, but is personally involved in it by example and instruction. In the same way that we as fathers make certain that our children have basic health habits like brushing their teeth and basic school skills like reading, we as fathers need also to make sure that our children have a basic understanding of key spiritual truths. They should be exposed early and repeatedly to foundational verses such as these.
- The Golden Rule – Matt. 7:12
- The Ten Commandments – Exodus 20:1-17
- The Fruits of the Spirit – Gal. 5:22,23
- The Beatitudes – Matt. 5:3-12
- The Gospel in a Nutshell – John 3:16
- God’s Forgiveness – 1 John 1:9
- God’s Care for us – 1 Peter 5:7
Rev. Jones noted that God chose Abraham because God was confident that Abraham would instruct his family to follow his example of faith (Gen. 18:19). Without Abraham’s leadership, future family blessings would have been jeopardized. If we fail to lead spiritually, then we fail to enable our children’s path forward as we could have. Remember God’s promise!
The Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children. Ps. 103:17
