Pastor Kelvin and JoAnne return for a Communion Sunday.
Watch the service
The message theme for the remaining Sundays in July is the Great Commission. We easily remember the first two most important commandments which Jesus pointed out.
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Matt 22:37-39 NIV
But we may not think about the third most important one, the Great Commission. That is the command that Jesus gave to his church just before he returned to heaven.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matt 28:18-20 NIV
Jesus asks his followers to recruit others to become followers of Jesus, helping them to learn his ways. To fulfill this command, we also must go outside our assembly, outside our comfort zone, and outside our familiar circle of friends. Jesus uses the contacts we have to give us opportunities to share. but we can be intentional about reaching out too just as Jesus was. It is important to note, Pastor Kelvin pointed out, that people who are making disciples for themselves in the name of Christian faith, are not following the Great Commission. We are to be making disciples for Jesus under the authority of Jesus.
It was good to have Pastor Kelvin and JoAnne back at church this week after recovering from multiple things, including COVID. This Sunday we held our July Communion service which had been delayed by their illnesses. The next Communion Sunday is planned for August 14. Pastor’s brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Chris Jones, will be sharing about their mission work in Guatemala that day.
