First Virtual Communion
Bishop Thomas Bickerton has given pastors special permission during this COVID-19 pandemic to hold virtual communion services. It might be hard for us to think about virtual communion, at first. But, we can remember from Scripture that God is not hindered in his working by distance. Remember that Jesus healed the royal official’s son without ever seeing him at all (John 4:46-53). Remember also that in the book of Acts, God chose to bless even handkerchiefs that had been in Paul’s presence so that people were healed when the handkerchiefs were taken to them (Acts 19:12). So, we might extrapolate into the 21st century that it is not too hard for God to use the pastor’s blessing during a virtual service to bless our obedience in remembering Jesus at home and the communion elements being used to remember him there. The other necessary part for our celebration of the Lord’s Supper is the preparation of one’s heart and having an attitude of receptivity to the grace of God. We can have the right attitude at home as we can at church. God is searching everywhere for holy and humble hearts.
So during the service this morning, Pastor Kelvin led the congregation in the first ever virtual communion at Copper Hill Church. Pastor Jones prayed, “May God’s Holy Spirit work through this way that we have found to keep the command of Jesus together, separated in space but united in heart and purpose.”
Pastor Kelvin spoke of the need to learn to wait on God. COVID-19 causes us to wait for many things, but if while we are waiting, we also learn to spend time with God, listening, growing in faith, and looking to him for strength, then we will have received a great blessing in these uncertain times.
