Why do our part for the planet?

In thinking about practical ways to express our faith, we often neglect everyday topics like home landscaping and taking out the recycling. But should we? Perhaps we need to remember that the second command given to humanity in the Garden of Eden related to the care of the creation. This week Pastor Kelvin explained that when God told Adam and Eve to rule over the creation, he expected them to care for the earth wisely and judiciously, not ruthlessly and selfishly as humanity has often done. Pastor pointed out that even before the fall, Adam and Eve were in the garden to “work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Adam’s first job was to name the animals. But as we all know, humanity’s record at caring for the earth continues to be very poor. Pastor Kelvin pointed out that in the Old Testament the Bible makes clear that the earth belongs to God (Leviticus 25:23; Psalm 95:3 – 5). Since the earth is the Lord’s, then we have been given a trust to be stewards of it. This has huge implications for those who worship God. What are some practical ways that we can express our reverence to God in our care for the earth? Each of us will have different ecological concerns. The key thing is to recognize that issues of the environment are moral issues. While we may not all agree about details, we can agree that God desires for us to take care of the planet upon which he has placed us.
